Every fall semester during September Colorado Gamma volunteers for the annual Walk to Defeat ALS around the Oval at Colorado State University. Hundreds of people around Fort Collins come to support this walk, and this past year the local ALS Association Chapter raised over 100,000 dollars to donate for research to find a cure.
We enjoy life by the help and society of others
To our chapter, community service and philanthropy are essential pieces of living up to the ideals of the Fraternity. As a chapter we participate in a wide array of community service events a semester. This past semester, Colorado Gamma volunteered for the Fort Collins Habitat For Humanity. As well as volunteered for the annual Fall Clean Up put on by the University where students organizations lend a hand to the Fort Collins community by helping those in need by cleaning up their yards and houses as well as local parks. Our relationship with CSU and Fort Collins are incredibly important to us and we strive to maintain those in every way we can. Our individual members are encouraged to serve in ways and for organizations that are important to him and impact the Fort Collins community and ones that are put on outside of whole chapter planned events. Many members participate in local small community service events and also large ones that are not put on by CSU such as the Fort Collins Gateway auction. Colorado Gamma is always looking for more opportunities to be involved in our community so if you know of any event that needs volunteers let us know and we would love to show our support.
We do it for Brother Lou
Phi Delta Theta has a unique partnership with The ALS Association in honor of Phi Delta Theta member and baseball great, Lou Gehrig, who passed away from ALS, now commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. The mission of The ALS Association is to lead the fight to treat and cure ALS through global research and nationwide advocacy while also empowering people with Lou Gehrig’s disease and their families to live fuller lives by providing them with compassionate care and support.
Each year, thousands of dollars are raised for The ALS Association through the efforts of Phi Delta Theta members across the country. This is partly due to the positive relationship each chapter has with the local ALS Association chapter in their area. Colorado Gamma is no exception. We have a very mutually beneficial relationship with the Northern Colorado Chapter. A couple of our members even serve on the committee for the chapter helping plan for fundraising events such the Walk to Defeat ALS as well as other awareness and other fundraising events.
Each chapter of Phi Delta Theta has the opportunity to create their own events to support the ALS Association and for Colorado Gamma our event is Fratagonia. It occurs in the fall semester usually at the end of September or early October. It happens over a full week with each day having a new event raising money for the ALS Association. Each event is fun and interactive with some bringing out the inner competition in people. There are events such as penny wars and a volleyball tournament. Fratagonia involves the sororities on campus where they form teams for their chapter to compete in events. The way a team wins is acquiring points throughout the week with the week concluding with our main event, the scavenger hunt around the Colorado State University campus. Each team is lead by a Phi Delt captain who helps them throughout the week and leads them through the scavenger hunt. It is a race with a variety of stops around campus with each stop teaching each team facts about ALS. The scavenger hunt concludes with a BBQ at our chapter facility where we have food catered, a dunk tank, merchandise table and music! Everyone is welcome to this event and it has been great to see all the support for our event.
Not only do we put on our own events for our international philanthropy but we love to support other Greek chapter’s philanthropy events. Our relationship with other Greek organizations is one of our main priorities and its a lot of fun to go to their events!
Iron Phi – The Brotherhood of Athletes
Another way that Phi Delts show their dedication to the fight against Lou Gehrig’s disease is through Iron Phi. Iron Phi was developed to strengthen both Phi Delta Theta and its impact on the fight against Lou Gehrig’s disease. Iron Phis must raise $1,000 through the Iron Phi fundraising website and achieve an athletic goal of choice. Dollars raised are split between The ALS Association for ALS research and the Phi Delta Theta Foundation for educational programming initiatives. Dollars raised by Canadian Phis are applied to the ALS Society of Canada and the Canadian Phi Delta Theta Scholarship Foundation. More than 1,500 Phis of all ages and athletic abilities have raised $500,000+ by doing everything from running and biking to swimming and walking in their pursuit to become Iron Phis.
